External monitor screen not displaying when docked or showing the same picture or showing incorrectly

Please work through the possible solutions below

When an external monitor is not showing it's typically either because the screen is not on, the cables are not plugged in or the input source is incorrect.

Warning: Do not update graphics drivers yourself. Raise a support ticket if you cannot resolve the issue using the troubleshooting steps below.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. For laptops select the F8 key (or fn+F8) to bring up the screen options. Select extend or duplicate.
    1. Alternatively, right-click on the desktop > select Display settings
      1. or windows-icon-16-png-1 Windows Start > type Display settings and select
    2. Choose extend or duplicate in the display settings.
  2. Ensure the monitor is powered on. There might be a light on the monitor to indicate it's on.
    1. If you're not sure or it's on already and not working, turn off and on using the button on the monitor or by unplugging.
  3. Ensure the cables are connected securely.
  4. Remove and reconnect the USB-C cable from the dock or HDMI cable from the laptop.
    1. If you have another USB-C port on your computer try the cable in that port instead.
  5. Like TVs, monitors can have multiple inputs and it may not have switched over automatically. Ensure the monitor is showing the correct input source that is connected to your computer or dock. Typically USB-C, HDMI, Display Port (DP) or DVI.
    1. Most monitors have physical buttons on them to switch sources.
  6. Restart your computer and try again.
  7. If available, try another external monitor. If this works, the issue might be the first external monitor.
  8. Press Win+Ctrl+Shift+B to restart your computer's graphics
