# How do I change the default list separator character in Excel on a Windows computer?

## A list separator in Excel determines the character used to separate values in functions and data. By default this is a comma

### To change the list separator

1. Press the Windows key  ![windows-11-start-png](https://help.stalbansdiocese.org/hs-fs/hubfs/windows-11-start-png.png?width=32&height=32&name=windows-11-start-png.png)
2. Type **Control Panel**
3. Choose **Clock and Region**
4. Select **Region**
5. In the **Formats** tab select **Additional settings....**
6. In the **Numbers** tab, locate **List separator** and type in your desired character, eg. `,` or `;`
   
     1. `,` is the default
     2. `;` is used by Xledger
7. Select **OK**
8. Restart Excel for the change to take effect
