Outlook desktop is no longer showing status icons on colleague's names

Status icons show whether somebody is currently available (green), busy (red), away (yellow), out of office (pink) or offline (grey). Status is used across most Microsoft apps and services.

Re-enable Status Icons in Outlook Desktop

To get status icons back, you need to register Microsoft Teams as your default chat app:

1. Open Microsoft Teams
2. Select the 3 dots next to your profile picture or initials (top right)
3. Select Settings
   
4. Under General > Application, select Register Teams as the chat app for Office
5. This setting is applied automatically, there is no save button.
6. Close the window and restart your Microsoft Office applications (or restart the computer)
