Identify which Outlook version you are using and how to switch the Outlook desktop version

Not sure if you're using the New Outlook app, Outlook Classic for Desktop or Outlook on the Web? This article describes how to identify which Outlook you are using and how to switch the app version in Windows.

The 4 versions of Outlook

MicrosoftStore-OutlookForWindows-png1. Outlook for Windows / Outlook for Mac
  • Also known as New Outlook. This is the newest desktop app of Outlook and is becoming the default Outlook app.
  • For personal devices, access to diocesan accounts using this app is restricted.
Microsoft-Outlook2. Outlook Classic for Windows
  • This is the original desktop Outlook app that comes with Microsoft/Office 365 and previous versions of Office. This app will be retired in due course.
  • For personal devices, access to diocesan accounts using this app is restricted.
3. Outlook for the Web for web browsers
  • Also known as webmail. This can be accessed via a web browser at https://outlook.cloud.microsoft
  • For personal devices, access to diocesan accounts is restricted to Microsoft Edge work profiles.

4. Outlook Mobile for iPhone, iPad and Android devices

  • The Apple or Android version which can be installed from the Company Portal on work devices or from the Apple Store / Google Play Store on personal devices.

Am I using New Outlook or Outlook Classic on my Windows computer?

You can use either depending on your preferences however please note that Outlook Classic is likely to be retired at some point in the future.

Try the new Outlook toggle

Look for the New Outlook toggle in the top right of Outlook.

Tip: Use the New Outlook toggle to switch versions on a Windows computer

  • If the toggle is On you are using New Outlook
  • If the toggle is Off you are using Outlook Classic

Layout differences between New Outlook and Outlook Classic

  • New Outlook
    1. The top menu does not contain Send / Receive
    2. In the top left DIOCESE OF ST ALBANS displays
    3. In the top left there's a ☰ 3 line button to show and hide the navigation pane
    4. In the top right there's a ⚙️settings cog

  • Outlook Classic
    • The top menu contains Send / Receive
    • DIOCESE OF ST ALBANS, ☰ and ⚙️are not displayed
