How Password Managers handle multiple websites on the same domain
When switching between sites like login.example.com and portal.example.com, saved passwords may get overwritten—especially if the login forms are similar. This happens because browsers often treat subdomains as separate sites but prompt to update existing credentials.
A good example of this is if you have a login for both the main diocesan website and the Connect / Resource Centre:
- www.stalbansdiocese.org
- resource.stalbansdiocese.org
The end address, stalbansdiocese.org, is the same so when signing into one site, particularly with the same email address, you may overwrite the password for the other site if you choose to update the credentials from the popup prompt.
To resolve in both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, add the second login manually to the inbuilt password manager...

How to resolve in Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge Wallet:
- Click the three dots (⋯) in the top-right corner.
- Go to Settings > Profiles > Passwords.
- Review and Add Manually New Saved Credentials:
- Look for entries with the end part of the website's address, eg.
stalbansdiocese.org
- Select each one to check which site or subdomain the entry is for and its username and password.
- When asked to sign in, use your computer's password
- Select the eye to view the password
- Select Edit to change the username password manually
- Manually add another credential for a similar site, eg. resource.stalbansdiocese.org, by selecting Add under Settings > Profiles > Passwords.
- You will then see multiple accounts for the same site
- Select to view all accounts for that site:
- Look for entries with the end part of the website's address, eg.
- Avoid Overwriting:
- When logging into a website with this issue, when prompted to update a saved password, select Not now
- If you need to change or add new credentials, do so manually via the Wallet
- When logging into a website with this issue, when prompted to update a saved password, select Not now
- Signing in with multiple accounts
- Once you have multiple accounts stored, the correct credentials should autofill on the correct site.
Note: If Microsoft Edge is not auto-filling your password for you, go to back to the Microsoft Wallet > select ⚙️Settings > enable View and autofill passwords and passkeys
How to resolve in Google Chrome
- Open Google Password Manager:
- Click the three dots (⋯) in the top-right corner.
- Select Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager
- Review and Add Manually New Saved Credentials:
- Look for entries with the end part of the website's address, eg.
stalbansdiocese.org
- Select each one to check which site or subdomain the entry is for and its username and password.
- When asked to sign in, use your computer's password
- Select the eye to view the password
- Select Edit to change the username password manually
- Manually add another credential for a similar site, eg. resource.stalbansdiocese.org, by selecting Add under Settings > Profiles > Passwords.
