How do I reset or change my Microsoft 365 password and multi-factor authentication (MFA / 2FA)?

Your Microsoft 365 password is used for your computer, email, files (OneDrive & SharePoint) and other 365 services at office.com.

Warning: Keep your password to yourself, do not tell or give anybody access to it including the IT Team. If you believe your account has been compromised please change your password immediately (see below) and notify the IT Team by raising a support ticket.

*Password Requirements

Passwords can't contain your user ID and need to be at least 8 characters long with at least 3 of the following: upper-case letters, lower-case letters, numbers and symbols.

If you get this message when trying to change your password you will need to use another password. Even if your password meets Microsoft's requirements, it is not an exhaustive list. Other elements like including your name or a year are also not accepted.

  1. Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/
  2. Sign in with your credentials. If you have forgotten your password you will need to raise a support ticket to regain access.
    1. Choose 'Password' to change your password*.
    2. Choose 'Security info' to add, remove or change your verification methods (MFA / 2FA)
  3. As this password is for many services, restarting and signing back into your computer with your new password should update your 365 password used by other applications. However keep an eye out for password requests, particularly for Outlook and the OneDrive app, in case they require you enter your new password again.
