The shared link I received for a file or folder does not work, how can I get access?

Follow these tips when receiving a link created in SharePoint

Troubleshooting shared links with passwords

  1. Ensure you are using the correct link and password. Copy and paste to get the exact characters or type the password in manually.
  2. Ensure your internet browser or password manager is not autofilling a different password to the one you were given. Copy and paste to get the exact characters or type the password in manually.
  3. Try clearing your internet browser's cache (local copy of pages) and using the link again.

  4. Try open the link in a different internet browser such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Safari etc
  5. Try using a private / incognito mode in your internet browser

  6. If you are still not able to use the link, contact the person who sent the link to you.
    1. If you are the person who created or sent the link, double check the link and password work. Use it in a private / incognito mode

Troubleshooting shared links with no password

  1. The email address that was used to share the file or folder with in the cloud service is the one that you need to use for access. If you use another email address then this link won't work. For example:
    1. Jane shares a file to the email address, joe@workaddress.com and sends the link to the same address.
    2. Joe opens the link but uses joe@homeaddress.com to sign into the cloud storage service or is already signed into the same cloud storage service with joe@homeaddress.com
    3. The link does not work for Joe because he's signed in with the wrong account.
    4. Joe needs to sign out of the cloud storage service and sign in or create an account (if it doesn't exist) with his joe@workaddress.com address.
    5. Alternatively Joe can sign into the cloud storage service using private / incognito mode in his internet browser.
  2. The shared link may not have been correctly created for you to access. Please contact the person who sent the link to you.
    1. If you are the person who created or sent the link, check the access is correct for the file or folder. See pages 15-16:
      SharePoint and OneDrive Ultimate Guide
    2. Create and send a new link if required:
